Pre-bootloader backup help

Hi guys, I couldn't find anything related that gave me a perfect answer so forgive me if it has already been answered!
I plan on flashing CM, so I should unlock my bootloader, but if I do that, the phone would factory reset! I want to keep my data so I read that I could do an adb backup. Now, from I what I read, this is great, because I can have a backup of my phone before I do anything, in case anything goes wrong, but I have a few questions:
1) Does the adb backup, backup the actual ROM? (I'm assuming no, but I would like to be sure)
2) After I make a backup, unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP and CM, can I restore this backup, so that I can keep my data? I guess this question is if I can restore the backup to any ROM or just the original one it was mad out of? (like I said, I'm assuming the backup doesn't have the ROM itself)
3) What would be the ideal adb command so that I could the maximum amount of data restored? I planned on using " -apk -shared -all -system " is this correct?
4) What exactly does it backup? From the commands, I'm assuming the app apks, it's data, maybe data stored on the sd card and system apps and data. Is the correct? What else if there is more? (I'm aware the contact, SMS and calendar information won't be restored)
I guess that's basically it! :P Sorry if it was a bit long but I hope someone can help me! (:
