How to make apps stay running in background?

I have a pet project to turn Fire TV's into nice to use BT Sync 2.0 boxes connected to USB drives. Sideloaded BT Sync no prob but I noticed it seems to terminate itself when its not the primary focus app.. anyone of having it running all the time?
