Help me understand wiping

So I've read the TWRP page on wiping and it says to wipe data and cache (via factory reset) when changing ROMs. Now, I've only owned 1 android phone, my droid 4. I don't know how things work on other phones, but I think I remember reading (very possible I'm wrong here) that some/many other phones don't have the ROM slot setup that droid 4 does. Meaning they can only have 1 ROM installed at a time, whereas with my droid 4, I currently have stock and CM11 installed and can freely switch between the two.

If this is true, is there any need for me to ever wipe if I don't install over an in-use slot? Suppose I want to install SlimKat in a new, 3rd ROM slot. Do I need to wipe? If I do wipe, what is it erasing? The empty contents of the new ROM slot, which doesn't make much sense, or something shared between all the slots? The reason I'm asking is because my droid is getting sluggish and I want to try SlimKat, but I don't want to lose apps/settings/data in my other ROMs.
