Does the nexus player still have issues?

I held off on getting one a while back due to the reports that it had issues streaming content and that even the chromecast was better.

I picked up an nvidia shield android tv which has been absolutely flawless at streaming via apps on the system or casting to it. However I would like to get a nexus player for a family member since its cheaper.

Does it still have the issues from the past or have software updates resolved this?
