Do I need S-OFF to flash Cyanogen Mod on M8

Hey Guys,

On Cyanogen's website it is written that I should have S-OFF on my M8 in order to install their ROM, so it really necessary to have S-OFF?Did any of you guys try to flash one of their having S-OFF?
